Goodbye Cocoa Beans

Goodbye+Cocoa+Beans

Chocolate is something that many people love and probably eat more than they should. Sadly they might only have a limited amount of time to enjoy chocolate before it disappears for good. Cocoa trees are at risk of going extinct and it is not as known as it should be. The main cause of this is climate change and the altered conditions cocoa trees must survive in.

Climate change is a big problem in today’s age and it affects cocoa trees just as much as anything else. Cocoa trees are mainly grown in the Ivory Coast and Ghana but the suitable growing areas are diminishing. By 2050 it is estimated that only 10.5% of growing locations will still be able to produce profitable cocoa trees and beans. Currently, growing conditions are 20 degrees north and south of the equator but if nothing is done to combat climate change that number will become a fraction of what it is now.

There are many things that you can do to combat climate change and make sure that our delicious chocolate can stay with us for many years to come. Renewable energy is one of the best ways to help combat climate change. Currently, we use a lot of fossil fuels for our energy production which gives off greenhouse gasses that destroy the ozone layer and cause climate change. Solar energy is an example of renewable energy that uses the sun’s rays and turns them into electricity without harming the environment.

Overall there are many things we can do to keep our cocoa trees around and continue to have chocolate but if none of those things are done we will lose chocolate for good. Climate change is the biggest problem that we face when it comes to the extinction of cocoa beans. Hopefully, you will make the choice to do something about climate change and save chocolate.
